Hot Tub FAQ
Chlorine or bromine: which should I use?
Both keep hot tub water safe. Chlorine works fast and is easy to dose after each soak. Bromine holds up a bit better in hot water and is popular for tubs with a floater or feeder. Choose one and don't switch back and forth without draining. See sanitizers
How often should I shock my hot tub?
Once a week, and after a party or heavy use. See shock
Why is my hot tub water cloudy?
The usual causes are low sanitizer, high pH or alkalinity, a dirty filter, or a buildup of oils. Test first, balance, shock, and clean the filter. A clarifier helps clear what's left. Read our hot tub chemical guide
Why is my hot tub foamy?
Foam usually comes from soaps, lotions, hair products or laundry detergent left in swimsuits. Shock the water and add a defoamer. If foam keeps coming back, it may be time to drain and refill.
Can I use pool chemicals in my hot tub?
It's best to use products made for spas. Hot tubs hold far less water and run much hotter than pools, so pool products can be hard to dose correctly, and some, like trichlor tablets, are not recommended for hot tubs.
How often should I drain and refill?
Every three to four months for most hot tubs, sooner with heavy use. See drain and refill supplies
